Honoring Heritage and History

The Memorialization Project at Montpelier

The Memorialization Project is a profound initiative dedicated to honoring the lives of enslaved individuals at James Madison’s Montpelier. Through a collaborative effort between The Montpelier Foundation and the Montpelier Descendants Committee, this project seeks to create a space of remembrance and reflection. With the support of the Mellon Foundation, we aim to bring to light the stories and contributions of those who were historically marginalized, ensuring their voices are heard and respected in the narrative of American history.
By acknowledging the past, we strive to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the African American community. This project not only serves as a memorial but also as a catalyst for dialogue, education, and healing, reinforcing our commitment to inclusivity and historical accuracy.
